When to go
The best time to visit Mangalore is October through March when temperatures range from 21-33°C and rainfall is minimal (2-14 mm monthly). April-May gets hot (34°C average) but is good for budget travelers. Monsoon season runs June-August with extreme rainfall—July averages over 1000 mm—causing flooding in low-lying areas. January hosts a popular kite festival at Panambur Beach.

Getting in
Mangalore International Airport (IXE) at Bajpe has daily domestic flights to Mumbai, Bangalore, Goa, Kochi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Surat, Delhi, and Kozhikode via Air India, SpiceJet, and Air India Express. International flights operate weekly/bi-weekly to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Muscat, Doha, Kuwait, and Bahrain. By rail, Mangalore Central (MAQ) at Hampankatta is the terminus; Mangalore Junction (MAJN) at Kankanady handles long-distance trains from north and south India. By bus, KSRTC operates services from the Bejai stand to Mumbai, Bangalore, Mysore, Goa, Hubli-Dharwad, and Kasaragod.

Get around
Autorickshaws charge around ₹20-30 for short trips within the city. Local express buses connect beaches—Kapu Beach (45 km north) takes 45 minutes by bus; Panambur Beach (10 km north) is well-served by bus or autorickshaw. For Malpe Beach (60 km north), express buses run frequently with local ferries to nearby islands departing every 30 minutes until 5 PM. Train travel uses Konkan Railway connections.

Things to do
Most attractions are places of worship. The 12th-century Mangaladevi Temple in Bolar opens 6AM-1PM and 4PM-8:30PM. St. Aloysius Chapel on Lighthouse Hill features stunning paintings. Kateel Durgaparameshwari Temple sits on a rocky island in the Nandini River. For nature, Pilikula Nisargadhama (12 km from city) combines a water theme park, animal park, boating, science centre, arboretum, and golf course. India's first surf club, Mantra Surf Club, is 24 km away at Mulki (take express bus toward Udupi, ask for Hare Krishna Ashram; autorickshaws charge ₹20-30 from Mulki stand). Beaches include Panambur (10 km north, good for swimming), Someshwar Beach (11 km south, sunset views), Suratkal Beach (15 km north, powder-like sand), and Tannirbavi Beach (12 km, accessible by ferry from Sulthan Battery).

Ullal beach village is just 10 km south with access by bus, train, or autorickshaw. Udupi (54 km north) is famous for Krishna temples and vegetarian Udupi cuisine. Moodbidre (34 km) is known as Bamboo Town. Kasaragod (53 km north, in Kerala) offers scenic rivers and beaches. Karkala (61 km) is a pilgrimage centre. For hill stations, Chikmagalur (151 km) and Madikeri (138 km) in Coorg offer coffee plantations and trekking. Dharmasthala is a renowned temple town nearby.

Etiquette
Remove shoes before entering temples. Dress modestly covering shoulders and knees at religious sites. Mangalore has diverse religious communities (Hindu temples, Catholic churches, mosques) so be respectful during prayers. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory at restaurants. Bargaining is expected at markets but not at fixed-price malls.

Ideals Ice Cream
There are three parlours (2 ideals, 200 metres of one another. One is located near the Milgres junction and the other one is near the next junction heading towards the market) 3rd one 'Pabba's', at Lalbagh diagonally facing Saibeen Complex. Ideals is marked as one of the best ice cream in DK, when you are in mangalore this is a must try place. You have to try out "Gadbad" ice cream which is only available in Ideals and the best of all ice creams. Gadbad icecream is an old favorite which has dry fruits and fresh ones chopped up with nuts, layered with icecream (strawberry and vanilla) and topped off with Jello. Hot favorites are "Chocolate Dad" and "Tiramisu".
