Before you go
Connectivity
No international dialing available. Internet cafes exist but speed is slow. Some cafes restrict Wi-Fi access to foreigners.
Health
A small government-run hospital exists with basic medicine and an English-speaking doctor, but for serious emergencies travel to a larger city is advised.
Money
Many prices are quoted in US dollars for accommodation (US$5-26 depending on room type), while local expenses like food, drinks, and bicycle rental are in Myanmar kyat.
Transport
Hsipaw is accessible by train from Mandalay to Lashio. Night buses arrive from other destinations. Within town, walk, rent a bicycle (500 kyat/day), or hire a trishaw or taxi.
Weather
Treks are strenuous in hot weather with hills. The dry season (November to February) is optimal for trekking.
