Restaurants close between 2pm-5pm. Tomato dishes and Hida beef are local specialties. The Ideyu Morning Market (Mar-Nov) and Night Market (Jul-Aug) offer local produce and street food.

Hot spring waters are reputed to have curative properties. Foot baths are free and accessible. The open-air Fountain Pond bath requires swimwear.

Japan uses Japanese Yen (JPY). ATMs at post offices and convenience stores accept foreign cards. Most ryokan and restaurants prefer cash.
Transport
Gero Station on the JR Takayama Line connects to Takayama (1 hour) and Gifu. The town is walkable, but taxis are useful for luggage or reaching attractions like Gassho Village.

Mountainous location means distinct seasons. Autumn offers spectacular fall colors. Cherry blossoms bloom in spring. Summer nights feature the Ideyu Night Market.
