Before you go
Connectivity
Standard South Korean mobile networks (KT, SKT, LG Uplus) provide excellent coverage across the island. WiFi is available at most accommodations and cafes.
Culture
Ganghwa was historically a place of exile for political figures deemed dangerous. The island's Joseon-era military importance earned it the nickname 'heart of the country.'
Money
South Korean Won (₩) is the local currency. Credit cards are accepted at larger establishments like Elijah Resort, but smaller motels and local eateries may be cash-only.
Safety
The northern part of the island faces North Korea across the Han River. Photography toward the north may attract scrutiny. The island is otherwise a quiet rural area.
Transport
Two bridges connect Ganghwa Island to the mainland. Local buses are infrequent—plan your sightseeing around limited schedules. Ferry to Seokmodo Island runs every 30 minutes (W2000).
