Overview
El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar National Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and biosphere reserve in Sonora, Northern Mexico. The reserve encompasses dramatic desert landscapes of the Gran Desierto de Altar, including the iconic volcanic crater known as Crater Elegante.

Connectivity
No cellular coverage or internet within the reserve. Connectivity available in Puerto Peñasco.
Safety
Carry ample water (3+ liters), inform someone of your plans, and expect no cell phone coverage in the reserve.
Transport
Private vehicle required—no public transit serves the reserve. Highway 2 provides access from Puerto Peñasco and Mexicali.
Weather
Visit November-March for mild temperatures. Summer heat exceeds 40°C and makes outdoor activity dangerous.
