Why Go
Puerto Peñasco, also known as Rocky Point, is a beach city on the Sea of Cortez in Sonora, Mexico, about 112 km (70 miles) south of the Arizona border. From 1995 to 2020, the population grew from 27,000 to 63,000, making it one of the fastest-growing tourist centers in northern Mexico. The city attracts many American and Canadian visitors and expats seeking beach life without needing a passport for day trips. The area offers white-sand beaches, nightlife on Calle 13 and the malecón, fishing charters, bird island eco-tours, and desert off-roading near Cholla Bay.

Getting In
Most visitors drive in from the United States via the Lukeville, Arizona border crossing, which is open daily from 06:00 to 00:00. Puerto Peñasco shares the same time zone as Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona, and does not observe Daylight Saving Time. There is no major airport at Puerto Peñasco; the nearest commercial airports are in Tucson or Phoenix. Car rental is available from The Point Rent-a-car on Blvd Benito Juarez (tel. +52 638-388-5823).

Getting Around
Taxis are the main way to get around for visitors without cars; have your hotel call one or flag one down on major streets. Fares should not exceed US$2-3 per person in regular areas, though tourist taxis on Sandy Beach charge higher rates. Microbuses run through town for a minimal fee, serving mostly local workers. The Point Rent-a-car on Blvd Benito Juarez across from Latitud 31 offers car rentals for longer stays.

When To Go
Puerto Peñasco is a year-round destination, though peak season runs from fall to spring. Shrimp season runs September to March, when the fish market at the malecón is popular for fresh catch. Spring Break historically drew college students to Avenida Matamoros (now quieter), though the area has many closed bars. Summer months are hot but quieter, ideal for those seeking fewer crowds.
