Why Go

Dong Hoi is a quiet coastal city on the Nhat Le River near the South China Sea, with 12 km of white sandy beaches and almost no tourists. It's the main gateway to Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the world's largest caves. The city itself is relaxed—you'll be greeted with many hellos from locals—but the real draw is exploring massive cave systems like Paradise Cave and Phong Nha Caves, plus relaxing on empty beaches before the crowds arrive.

Getting There

Dong Hoi has good transport connections: Dong Hoi Airport (6 km north) offers flights to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The Railway Station is 3 km from the city centre on the north-south rail line. The Bus Station provides regional connections. The city sits on National Route 1A, making it accessible by road from both north and south Vietnam.

Getting Around

Local transport is primarily by taxi and motorbike. Four taxi companies operate in Dong Hoi: Mai Linh (Quang Trung road), Dong Hoi Taxi (Huu Nghị road), Xuyen Viet Taxi (Phường Đồng Phú), and Quang Binh Taxi (Phường Bắc Lý). All offer cars for hire. Motorbikes can be rented at many hotels, which is the recommended way to reach the caves and enjoy the scenic Ho Chi Minh Road.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Dong Hoi is from April to September when temperatures are cool enough for swimming (26-31°C). The city has four distinct seasons: spring is cool, humid, and foggy; summer is hot; fall is rainy but comfortable; winter can be cool (below 18°C) due to northeast winds from mainland China. August sees the highest rainfall (118.4 mm) while January is the driest (38.9 mm). Average annual rainfall varies from 1,300 to 4,000 mm.

See

Dong Hoi's main sights include the Dong Hoi Citadel Gates (Quảng Bình Quan), where only two gates and a moat remain of the original citadel—you can climb up but the interior contains debris. On the riverfront along Nguyen Du, the bombed-out Tam Toa Church retains only its facade behind iron gates, a relic of war damage. Both attractions are free to visit.

Activities

Nhat Le Beach is a 20-minute walk from Dong Hoi centre across the bridge—generally empty and abandoned with few hotels, though the current can be strong for swimming. The Blind Massage Therapy Center at 43 D Van An offers massage by the blind for 70,000 dong per hour (April 2014) with saxophone music. The main draw is cave exploration: Paradise Cave (120,000 dong) is 45 km northwest near Son Trach with amazing stalactites and stalagmites, taking about 2 hours to visit. Phong Nha Caves (80,000 dong entry, plus 320,000 dong for a shared boat) are the largest and most stunning caves in Vietnam—nearly 55 km long but only the first kilometre is accessible, taking 3½ hours to tour.

Shopping

The main market is Chợ Đồng Hới, where the Fish Market operates from 05:00–09:00. Smaller convenience stores are found on every corner. WinMart supermarket is in Vincom Plaza at the southern end of the city, offering a comprehensive selection with reduced-price fruits in the evening. Nguyen Van Cu Bookstore is located by the Dong Hoi Citadel Gates.

Safety

Locals maintain that Dong Hoi is a major stop on the heroin smuggling trail—drugs arrive by boat and move overland to Laos. While traces are rarely visible in town (perhaps occasional needles or cracked syringes), visitors should remain aware. Otherwise, Dong Hoi is considered relatively safe for travelers.
