Understand

Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park covers 857.54 km² with a 1,954 km² buffer zone in Quảng Bình Province, protecting one of the world's two largest karst regions with 300 caves and grottoes. The park became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. In April 2009, the world's largest cave, Son Doong Cave, was discovered by a team from the British Caving Association. The plateau represents the finest and most distinctive example of complex karst landform in Southeast Asia.

Avoid night driving on roads to and from Dong Hoi due to limited lighting and wildlife hazards. Mosquito repellent is essential year-round; buy supplies at Capture Cafe in Phong Nha village. Flash flooding is a risk at Hang En Cave—check weather conditions before visiting and never attempt crossing flooded passages.
