Overview

Before you go
Safety
Active volcano with recent eruptions 2015-2016. Ash clouds contain sulfur dioxide—wear masks and eye protection. Altitude sickness risk above 4,000 m.
Transport
Most visitors access via Machachi with buses from Quito. Taxis to Limpiopungo Lagoon cost about $25. Park entry is 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM only.
Water
Refugio water is polluted by volcanic ash (Feb 2023). Bring your own drinking water or treatment methods.
Weather
Temperatures rarely exceed 20°C even near equator due to altitude. Nights below freezing year-round. Rainy season December-March.
