Before you go
Culture
Cienfuegos was founded by French settlers, giving it a unique architectural character with wider streets than typical Cuban cities. The city has strong musical traditions, including Benny More and other Cuban jazz artists.
Money
Cuba uses two currencies: CUC (Cuban Convertible Peso) for tourists and CUP (Cuban Peso) for locals. Most tourist establishments accept only CUC. Credit cards from US banks are generally not accepted. Exchange money at CADECAs state exchange houses.
Safety
Strict anti-prostitution policing means innocent interactions can result in detention of locals. Always have Cuban guests sign the guest book at casas particulares.
Transport
The centre and Punta Gorda are 3 km apart, connected by Calle 37. Horse-drawn carts (coches) on Calle 37 cost CUC1 for tourists. Taxis available through accommodations for longer distances.
Weather
Cienfuegos has a tropical climate. Peak tourist season is November to April when weather is drier and cooler. Summer months are hot and humid with more rain.
