Overview
Brejo da Madre de Deus is a small city in Pernambuco's interior that draws visitors primarily for the monumental Paixão de Cristo (Passion of Christ) spectacle in the district of Fazenda Nova, staged in the world's largest open-air theater with over 200,000 visitors during Easter week. Beyond the famous passion play, the city preserves colonial architecture from the 1700s and early 1800s, including works by French architect Louis Vauthier, and serves as a gateway to adventure activities in the caatinga vegetation and Atlantic Forest.
