Overview
Baengnyeong Island is South Korea's westernmost point, a remote island in the West Sea that feels worlds away from Seoul despite being administratively part of Gyeonggi province. The island is famous for its dramatic coastal cliffs that turn vivid red at sunset, and it's the legendary backdrop of Simcheongjeon, Korea's beloved fairy tale about filial devotion—a daughter who threw herself into the sea to heal her blind father.
