Overview

Ardahan is a small, chilly mountain city in Eastern Anatolia with a 2023 population of 42,000. It sees few tourists despite its dramatic history of being fought over by Ottoman and Russian empires.

History

Ardahan changed hands between Ottoman and Russian control through 19th century; ceded to Turkey in 1922 treaty. Nearby Georgia and Armenia became Soviet Socialist Republics, strangling regional trade.

Transport

Dolmuşes from Kars take 90 min; from Türkgözü/Posof on Georgian border take 2 hours. Bus station (Otogarı) is 1 km south of centre on D955.

Weather

Summers mild with afternoon showers; winters bitter cold, seldom above -10°C. Best visited May-September.
