Getting in
Shirak Airport (LWN) about 5 km from center, served by Pobeda from Moscow-Vnukovo, Ryanair from Memmingen and seasonally from Athens, Ural Airlines from several Russian cities. The main train station is at the end of Tigran Mets Avenue; express trains to Yerevan run Fri-Sun, slow Soviet trains more frequently. Marshrutkas to Yerevan (2.5 hr) and Vanadzor (1 hr) leave from the main bus station.

Getting around
The historic town center is walkable. Beyond that, taxis are cheap and easy to order via the GG app. Marshrutkas (local van routes) are an adventure but may not reach fringe sites like the fortress.

Local specialties include ponchik (fried dough with cream) at Ponchik-monchik, and Adjarian khachapuri at Tashir Pizza. Faeton on Hakhtanaki Ave has reasonable prices and outdoor seating. Several restaurants on Rijkov Street. For drinks, Dar Vino wine bar and Amigo Pub. Note that restaurants may close during holidays.

Things to do
Walk the old town with black stone architecture, visit the Black Fortress for views, explore the Museum of National Architecture and Urban Life (1,000 dram), and the Gallery of Mariam and Eranuhi Aslamazyan Sisters (1,000 dram). Marmashen Monastery, 15 km away, is a popular day trip. Participate in workshops: pottery, blacksmithing, doll-making, cooking traditional dishes. Hiking and biking tours available.
