Why go?

Kars is a remote city in Eastern Anatolia with a 2022 population of 91,500. The main draw is nearby Ani, the ruined medieval Armenian capital, but Kars itself offers Baltic-style Russian architecture from the 1878-1920 occupation, frigid winters that inspired Orhan Pamuk's novel Snow, and a quiet frontier-town atmosphere without mass tourism.
