Overview
Zuunmod serves as a peaceful counterweight to Ulaanbaatar's bustle, sitting just 40 km from the capital on a well-paved road. The town of 15,000 functions as a provincial capital with a small museum, one rebuilt temple-museum, and easy access to the ruins of Manzushir Monastery.

Before you go
Accommodation
Hotels may close in winter; ger camps also seasonal. Simple accommodation exists year-round, but options are limited and should not be over-planned.
Hiking
The marked trail from Manzushir Monastery to Tsetsee Gün (2256 m) takes 2-3 hours one way; allow 3-4 hours to continue to Ulaanbaatar. Poles with numbers aid navigation—note your location if lost.
History
Manzushir Monastery was built in 1733, destroyed in 1937, and partially rebuilt after 1990. The ruins of 17 buildings and a rebuilt temple-museum remain visible.
Transport
Marshrutka minibuses connect Zuunmod to Ulaanbaatar (40 km, ~1 hour) frequently from the capital's bus stations. Private taxi offers more comfort and flexibility.
Weather
Avoid Sundays at the monastery for fewer crowds. Summer brings sudden thunderstorms; winter brings snowstorm risk. Check forecasts before mountain hikes.
