Overview
Zhaoxing is a pretty Dong minority town nestling in a valley a long way away from anywhere. It's full of old wooden buildings, wind and rain bridges, and drum towers, surrounded by beautiful scenery.

Before you go
Accommodation
Multiple guesthouses offer basic rooms; the Zhaoxing Hotel has two branches (cheaper in town center, pricier by the bridge). No hostels or luxury options.
Admission
Village admission is ¥100 (¥50 for Shanghai residents) as of July 2018, payable at the ticket booth near the bus stop. This includes the nightly cultural performance.
Food
Guesthouse restaurants and street stalls serve local Chinese food. Finding Western or special-diet food is very difficult—bring supplies if needed.
Language
Local people refer to the town as Shaoxing; having the name written in Chinese characters (肇兴) will be useful for transport and navigation.
Transport
High-speed rail to Congjiang or Rongjiang is the fastest approach. Local buses run to/from Congjiang (¥15, 2½ hrs), Sanjiang (¥32, 3½ hrs), and Kaili (¥55, 7 hrs). Buses cannot enter the tourist area—be prepared to walk or take a golf buggy.
