Why go?
Longsheng and the Longji Rice Terraces offer some of China's most dramatic agricultural landscapes—layered paddies carved into mountain slopes by the Zhuang and Yao minorities over centuries. The area provides easy-to-moderate hiking through villages where traditional timber houses, elaborate minority dress, and some of the world's longest hair traditions persist. Unlike more commercialized destinations, this area delivers authentic rural immersion with panoramic views that justify the winding two-hour drive from Guilin.

Getting in
Longsheng is about two hours by winding mountain road from Guilin. Public buses depart from the new bus terminal near LIQ-Brewerie (not the central station) for around ¥40. The fastest option is a direct bus from Guilin railway station parking lot at 08:30 and 14:00 for ¥40 to Dazhai. Private shuttle buses cost about ¥350 direct from Guilin, and hotels can arrange pickups from the railway station. Alternative access via Sanjiang County involves 2-hour buses to Longsheng. All visitors pay ¥80 entrance to the terrace area (students ¥40) at the main ticket office.

Getting around
Both main villages—Ping'An (Zhuang majority) and DaZhai (Yao majority)—sit at the base of the terraces. Private vehicles must park below and take minibuses to village entrances; public buses go directly. From DaZhai, a gondola or hike reaches upper areas; Ping'An requires foot ascent. Sedan chairs are available for ¥20-25 to carry passengers up steep paths. Local women offer backpack-carrying services for ¥20-25, and some elderly guides speak advanced English. Bus schedules should be checked at Longsheng station—last departures are before sunset due to dangerous night driving on mountain roads.

When to go
The terraces are spectacular year-round. Late May brings water-filled paddies resembling dragon scales, with dawn and dusk reflections creating dramatic photography. Summer shows rice growing through green-to-golden stages. Winter occasionally blankets the area in snow. Ping'An and DaZhai each have their own village and hamlets within walking distance, with Zhongliu and other smaller settlements offering quieter alternatives to the main viewpoints.

Where to stay
Staying overnight transforms the experience—sunrises and sunsets over water-filled terraces are mesmerizing. Ping'An is more popular with direct road access and more accommodation options; DaZhai is quieter, more rural, and has no cars in the village. Tiantou village requires 30-40 minute uphill walks from DaZhai parking. Hotels range from ¥80-150 for standard rooms to ¥280-380 for upgraded guesthouses with better views and amenities. Properties like Baike Hotel, Longji One Hotel, and Xin Tian Hotel offer air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and English-speaking owners who can arrange transport from Guilin.

Food and drink
Village restaurants serve country-style Chinese food at reasonable prices. A local specialty is bamboo tube rice—rice stuffed into hollow bamboo cores with meats, vegetables, and spices, then sealed and cooked over open fires. Several houses in the villages have been rebuilt or newly constructed to accommodate visitors, so food options are more varied than typical rural Chinese areas. Green Garden Coffee House accepts credit cards and offers excellent food with rooms from ¥220 for two people. Vegetarian travelers can find options at JinKeng Vegetarian Hostel.

Things to do
The Rice Terraces (¥80 entry) offer 2-hour hikes to summits through Ping'An, with JinKeng area being slightly larger. Hiking between Ping'An and DaZhai takes about 3 hours. A well-signposted 1-1.5 hour circuit around Ping'An visits Viewpoint 1 (Nine Dragons and Five Tigers) and Viewpoint 2 (Seven Stars with Moon). From Ping'An, the walk to Zhongliu takes 2 hours, with another 2 hours to Dazhai through valleys and past a lake. DaZhai has three peaks to hike plus access to smaller surrounding villages. Longsheng Hot Spring provides natural hot spring spa facilities, recommended for winter or spring visits. Yao women in the region are famous for never cutting their hair—viewing is free, photos cost ¥10.

Safety
Mountain roads are winding and narrow—avoid night driving as it is considered dangerous by locals. The ticket office operation has caused tensions with local villagers who stage protests by delaying terrace flooding; this does not affect visitor safety. Hiking outside signposted areas can be tricky; local guides are available for small fees. No ATM exists in Dazhai—use Wisdom Inn for credit card cash advances or currency exchange. Carry water during hikes as facilities are limited on mountain trails.

Connectivity
Internet access is increasingly available at guesthouses. Li Qing Hotel, Baike Hotel, Longji One Hotel, Xin Tian Hotel, JinTian Guest House, Wisdom Inn, and Longji Rice Terraces Tian Ranju Inn all advertise free Wi-Fi. Green Garden Coffee House also has Wi-Fi. Mobile coverage exists but speed may be limited in mountain villages. Power outlets use Chinese Type I plugs (three flat pins in V-shape).

Hiring a local woman to carry bags costs ¥20-25. Sedan chairs for steep climbs run ¥20-25. Private shuttle from Guilin ¥350 for groups can reduce per-person costs significantly. Direct bus from Guilin costs ¥40-50 depending on destination.

Day trips
Guilin is 2 hours away by bus—its karst scenery and river cruises provide contrast to the terrace landscapes. Sanjiang County (2-hour bus from Longsheng) is the focal point of Dong minority culture, with the nearby Chengyang wind-and-rain bridges offering elaborate architectural examples. Longsheng sits on the Hong Kong to Kunming overland route, making it a natural stop between those major destinations.
