Overview
Yan'an is the "cradle of the Chinese Revolution" and China's most important "red tourism" destination after Shaoshan. The city served as the Communist Party's main base from 1935-1948 following the Long March, and visitors can explore historic sites where Mao Zedong and other leaders lived and worked.

Yan'an is generally a safe city. Standard precautions apply for valuables and crowded buses. The steep terrain of Yaodong areas requires careful footing.

Yan'an Nanniwan Airport has flights to 30+ Chinese cities. Railway connects to Beijing, Xi'an, and the north-south rail network. Local buses cost ¥1-2 per ride.
