Why Go
Yuncheng is one of the cradles of Chinese civilization, often called the "First Capital of Chinese Civilization" and the "Root of Chinese Civilization." It is the hometown of Guan Yu (the God of War and Loyalty), the birthplace of Emperor Shun, and home to the Salt Lake—China's "Dead Sea" covering approximately 2,000 square kilometers. The city offers a rare blend of ancient history, Taoist cultural heritage, and natural wonders without the crowds of major tourist destinations. Visitors come for the stunning Yuan Dynasty murals at Yongle Palace, the largest Taoist temple complex from that era, and the surreal blue-green salt flats that create a dreamy landscape unlike anywhere else in China.

Haizhou Guan Di Temple (145 Wu Yi Road, Haizhou Town) is the finest and most famous Guan Di temple in China, built by imperial decree in 589 CE during the Sui Dynasty. Admission ranges from ¥50-60 depending on season; catch bus no. 11 from Yuncheng Railway Station. Yuncheng Museum (Intersection of Yuxi Road and Weinan Street) offers free admission, open Tu-Su 09:00-17:00 (closed Mondays, no entry after 16:00).
