Overview
Yala is Sri Lanka's most visited and second largest national park, covering 979 km² across Southern Province and Uva Province. The park boasts the world's highest leopard concentration in its western block one, alongside significant populations of Sri Lankan elephants and aquatic birds.

Before you go
Money
Park entry is Rs 3,500 per person. Half-day luxury jeep tours with six people cost around Rs 15,000 total including fees and taxes. Carry Sri Lankan Rupees (LKR) for park fees and tour payments.
Packing
Bring binoculars for wildlife viewing, sunscreen, a dust mask or buff for bumpy dusty roads, and wear neutral clothing. Early morning departures are cold before sunrise.
Safety
Always stay inside your safari vehicle. Beware of crocodiles near water, dangerous lizards throughout, and never feed any wildlife.
Transport
Book safari tours from Tissamaharama guesthouses; shared jeeps depart at 05:00 and 14:30. Partner with other travelers to split the Rs 3,500 entrance plus Rs 4,000-6,000 tour cost.
