Why Go
Arugam Bay (locally Arugam Kudah, popularly shortened to "A-Bay") is Sri Lanka's premier surf destination and the only location in the country hosting international surf competitions. The town sits on the dry zone of the southeast coast, 320 km due east of Colombo, offering consistent right-hand reef breaks from April through October. Beyond surfing, the area provides access to Kumana National Park, elephant viewing at Lahugala Kitulana, and a relaxed beach-town atmosphere with budget-friendly cabanas, yoga studios, and surf schools lining Panama Road.

When to Go
The surf season runs April to October, with July and August offering the best waves but largest crowds. March and late October provide smaller crowds with still-decent conditions. The wet season (November-March) prevents surfable waves from forming, and most hotels and restaurants shut down completely during this period. Full moon days see dry restrictions nationwide.

Getting In
Arugam Bay is accessed via Pottuvil to the north, the main entry point for tourists. The nearest major city connections are Batticaloa (buses every hour) and Matara (one daily bus at 06:00, Rs. 305, 7-8 hours). From Wellawaya, travelers can connect to buses heading to Ella. There is no airport at Arugam Bay; the nearest domestic flights would connect through Colombo or Trincomalee.

Getting Around
The town centers on Panama Road running north-south parallel to the beach. Tuktuks are the primary mode of transport, readily available to ferry surfers and boards to various surf points. Tuk tuk safaris to Kumana National Park area cost around Rs. 10,000 per tuk tuk. For longer distances, local buses connect to Pottuvil (4 km north) and onward destinations.

Where to Stay
Around 70 hotels, hostels, and homestays operate in A-Bay, most being simple family-run cabana-style low-budget accommodations. Only about 120 rooms have air conditioning and basic luxuries, with Siam View Hotel being the only property fully air-conditioned. Popular options along the beach strip include Stardust, Galaxy, Beachhut, Tsunami Hotel, Tristar Hotel, Hideaway, Arugam Bay Surf Resort, and Siam View Hotel. Budget dorms start around Rs. 2,300-5,200 per night.

Food and Drink
Restaurants cluster either directly on the beach (Emma Restaurant, Friends Indeed) or along Panama Road. Many establishments display fresh fish like tuna or marlin without refrigeration—verify freshness before ordering. Meal costs range from Rs. 1,500-3,000 at casual spots like Mama's Restaurant (enormous shawarma wraps, buffet available) and Kaffi cafe (western baked goods). For nightlife, Galaxy Lounge hosts electronic music until sunrise on Wednesdays, while Funky De Bar is an open-air club operating Thursday-Saturday nights starting around 23:00. Wine shops (takeaway alcohol stores) offer cheaper prices than bars, particularly one opposite Palm Grove Holiday Inn.

Things to Do
Surfing dominates activities: Main Point and Baby Point sit within Arugam Bay itself, while Crocodile Rock (Elephant Rock), Panama, Okanda, and Peanut Farm beaches lie to the south, and Pottuvil Main Point to the north. Boards rent from Rs. 1,000/hour. Jeep safaris to Kumana National Park (Rs. 11,000/person, 6 hours) offer bird watching (peacocks, storks, flamingos), buffalo, elephants, and crocodiles. Boat trips on Pottuvil lagoon (Rs. 3,000/person, 2 hours) showcase eagles, crocodiles, and elephants, with 4-6PM being optimal timing. Lahugala Kitulana National Park (06:00-16:30) provides easier elephant viewing without Yala's crowds.

Buy
The market town of Pottuvil (4 km north) houses the only proper air-conditioned supermarket (Cargill's Food City). In A-Bay, Home Needs in the town center is the best-stocked shop. A single pharmacy operates in A-Bay, though more exist in Pottuvil. Shops on the main road often lack posted prices and may charge varying amounts—shop around and compare before purchasing.

Connectivity
Mobile coverage and WiFi availability depend on individual accommodations and restaurants. Most hostels and hotels offer some form of internet access for guests. Sri Lanka's major telecom providers serve the area with 4G coverage in populated zones.

Safety
Arugam Bay is generally safe for travelers, though standard precautions apply. Be aware of touts and taxi drivers in Pottuvil who may claim buses are not running or have already departed to divert travelers to private transport. Some shops have been reported for overcharging—questionable pricing practices were noted at a wine shop near Palm Grove Holiday Inn in September 2025. Always verify prices before committing to services.
