Overview
White Island (Maori: Whakaari, meaning 'The Dramatic Volcano') is the only active marine volcano near New Zealand's main islands. Named by Captain Cook in 1769 when he mistook volcanic steam for a white cloud, it offers a rare glimpse into raw volcanic power.
