Overview
Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne is one of the world's great prehistoric rainforests, offering a rare glimpse into a Jurassic-era ecosystem. Unlike Northern Hemisphere forests, it is an evergreen world that has never experienced seasonal leaf shedding.

DOC campsites and huts require payment; bring New Zealand Dollars in cash as card facilities are unlikely in the park.
Packing
Pack for changeable weather; the forest creates its own microclimate. Sturdy waterproof boots essential for track exploration.
Safety
River crossings can be hazardous after rain; check conditions before setting out on longer tracks. Tell someone your plans before entering.
Transport
Access is via SH38 and Te Whaiti Rd; a rental car or organized tour is recommended. No public transport reaches the park directly.
