When to go

Walcha has a cool climate with snow falls and frosty nights during winter (June-August), though frosts are usually followed by clear sunny days. Autumn offers stunning changing colors of trees for photography. Summer is popular but temperatures can suddenly drop. Due to altitude, the town is rarely humid and days reaching 33C are tolerable. Events include Golden Gate Campdraft and Rodeo (January), New England Merino Field Days (biennial, January of even years), Walcha Races (February), Walcha Show (March/April), Timber Expo (biennial, May), Garden Festival (spring even years), and Walcha Food, Wine and Craft Festival (last Sunday October).

Visit the Open Air Gallery with 35+ sculptures and 30 sculptured verandah posts (brochure from visitor centre). The Pioneer Cottage museum features an 1860s cottage and Tiger Moth plane. Tour historic churches including the 1861 Anglican church built with stone from Villa Walcha homestead. Visit Nathaniel Buchanan's grave (pioneer drover). See Langford stately home 1 km south on Thunderbolts Way. The Amaroo Museum and Cultural Centre showcases Aboriginal artwork and contemporary clothing with original designs. Apsley Falls (20 km east, sealed road, disabled access, 7 viewing platforms) and Tia Falls (44 km east) are spectacular waterfalls in Oxley Wild Rivers National Park.

Safety

Wilderness areas require 4WD with low range. Diesel can gel in very cold untreated summer nights. At below-freezing temperatures, diesel engines may have starting problems and warm up slowly (usually normal by 9AM). Mobile phone coverage is nonexistent in many district and surrounding areas. Medical facilities are limited to Walcha Multipurpose Service Hospital; major hospitals are distant.

Day trips

Apsley Falls is 20 km east via sealed road with disabled access, 7 viewing platforms, gorge rim walk, picnic and camping areas. Tia Falls is 44 km east along Oxley Highway. Riverside offers low range 4WD access into wilderness (fee required, key from Apsley Motors). Youdale's Hut is another 4WD destination (key from Apsley Motors). Werrikimbe National Park is 60 km east, a World Heritage wilderness with Racecourse Trail (20 km), subalpine swamp, heath, snow gums, and cool climate eucalypt forests. Mummel Gulf National Park is also nearby.

The Walcha Shire contains approximately 156,000 ha of National Parks and Wilderness including Oxley Wild Rivers and Werrikimbe National Parks. Banks include National Australia Bank, Commonwealth Bank, and Regional Australia Bank (limited hours). ATMs available at Commonwealth Bank (24 hours) and Cashcard ATM at New England Hotel Motel. Bank@Post at Australia Post handles Commonwealth, Westpac, and NAB transactions.
