Overview
Wakkanai is Japan's northernmost city with about 34,000 residents, serving as the gateway to Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park, the country's northernmost national park. The town offers a genuinely remote feel with strong winds off the Sea of Okhotsk and views across to Russian Sakhalin on clear days.

Connectivity
Standard Japanese 100V outlets (Type A/B). Mobile coverage from major carriers is good. WiFi available at hotels. Buy SIM cards or portable WiFi in Sapporo before arriving.
Culture
The city name 'Wakkanai' sounds like 'wakannai' (I don't understand in colloquial Japanese)—expect gentle teasing. Local omiyage (souvenirs) are primarily seafood products.
Food
Wakkanai specializes in seafood—crab, fish, octopus, and especially seaweed. Best restaurants cluster around Minami-Wakkanai station. Meals range from ¥750-2500.
Money
Only post office ATMs accept international credit cards in Wakkanai—no Citibanks or 7-Elevens with foreign-friendly ATMs. Plan to bring enough cash or withdraw at the airport upon arrival.
Transport
The town is walkable in 10-15 minutes. Soya Bus runs every 10-15 minutes. Buses to Cape Soya run only 4 times daily—miss the last bus and walking 30km is your only option.
Weather
Summer averages 20°C but nights are cold. Winter brings heavy snow (1200+mm December-January) and strong winds. The ryuhyo (floating ice) arrives in February-March.
