Overview

Uji is one of Japan's oldest cities, situated between the ancient capitals of Nara and Kyoto. The city preserves its classical beauty remarkably well—author Alex Kerr praised it in Lost Japan as a rare example of a historic Japanese city where modern development has not disrupted its traditional character.

Before you go

Culture

Uji produces Japan's most famous and expensive green tea. Tea ceremonies are a highlight, with options ranging from ¥1000 at the municipal tea house to ¥4320 for an elaborate experience. The city is deeply connected to The Tale of Genji.

Language

English signage is limited in Uji. Major temples and the Tale of Genji Museum have English displays and audio guides, but smaller establishments may have no English.

Money

Japan is largely cash-based, especially in smaller cities like Uji. Most temples, museums, and restaurants accept cash only. ATMs are available at convenience stores and post offices.

Safety

Uji is a very safe city with minimal crime. However, visitors should take care near the Uji River, especially in the evening or during wet conditions.

Transport

The JR Nara Line provides direct access from Kyoto (¥240, 20 min) and Nara (¥500, 35 min). Keihan Railway offers an alternative from Osaka. A Kyoto-Osaka sightseeing pass (¥700/1000 for 1/2 days) is good value for day-trippers.
