Overview

Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park (TARP) comprises five islands—Gaya, Manukan, Sapi, Sulug, and Mamutik—just minutes off the coast of Kota Kinabalu on Borneo. The park offers snorkeling, diving, jungle trails, and beach time within easy reach of Sabah's capital, making it ideal for day trips or overnight stays.

Before you go

Money

All prices in Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). Boat trips RM35-65, terminal fee RM7, admission RM25 non-Malaysians. Cash preferred on islands.

Packing

Bring insect repellent—sandflies are a nuisance on Mamutik. Wear shoes other than flip flops for jungle trails. Life jackets are mandatory for swimming.

Safety

Jellyfish season is October to May. Eastern Gaya Island has a dangerous area with high crime risk. Weather can be rough during monsoons.

Transport

Speedboats depart hourly from Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal (8AM-4:30PM). Return trips to any island cost RM35, with last boats back at 4PM. Arrive 30 minutes early to get tickets.

Weather

Best weather is morning to late afternoon. Check real-time weather online as conditions can change quickly. Weekdays are less crowded than weekends.
