Kota Kinabalu is the capital of Sabah on Borneo, a growing resort destination offering easy access to tropical islands, sandy beaches, lush rainforest, and Mount Kinabalu. It's a melting pot of Chinese, Kadazandusun, Bajau, and Malay cultures, with a vibrant food scene and night markets. The city is compact and walkable, with budget accommodation and transport options making it ideal for backpackers.

Getting in

Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI) is Malaysia's second busiest airport, with two terminals. Terminal 1 serves full-service airlines like Malaysia Airlines and Asiana Airlines. A taxi into the city costs RM30, and a minibus runs from 8AM to 7PM for RM5 (no longer operates as of 2024). The city bus/minibus from the main road costs RM1-3. Long-distance buses depart from South Bus Terminal (Wawasan) for destinations south and from North Bus Terminal (Inanam) for north and east, including Mount Kinabalu and Sandakan.

Getting around

The city centre is compact and walkable. Minibuses operate on fixed routes with fares around RM0.50 to RM2. Taxis are available from designated stands; a trip from the airport to the city is RM30 by taxi. For longer distances, Grab (ride-hailing) is widely used and often cheaper. Car rental is available from companies like JoyDrive and Kinabalu Rent A Car.

When to go

KK has a uniform tropical climate with year-round temperatures averaging 32°C high and 22°C low. Rainfall is lower from January to April, increases from May to August, intensifies from September to November, and slows in December. The weather can vary within the city and immediate area.

Where to stay

Accommodation ranges from budget hostels to luxury resorts. Backpacker-friendly options are concentrated around Gaya Street and Australia Place, with dorm beds from RM15 to RM35 per night. Popular hostels include Akinabalu Youth Hostel, Borneo Backpackers, and Kinabalu Backpackers. For more comfort, mid-range hotels like Hotel Holiday and Celyn City Hotel are available.

Food and drink

KK is a foodie paradise with a mix of Malay, Chinese, Filipino, and indigenous Sabahan cuisines. Must-tries include street food at the Night Market on Fridays and Saturdays, and local specialties like Tuaran noodles and seafood at Welcome Seafood. Vegetarian options are available at Gaya Vegetarian. For drinks, the KK Waterfront and Times Square are the main entertainment areas, with bars like Cock & Bull Bistro and Sunset Bar offering sunset views.

Things to do

Top attractions include the Atkinson Clock Tower, Signal Hill Observatory for city views, Sabah State Museum (closed as of Jan 2025), and the floating Kota Kinabalu City Mosque. Outdoor activities: visit Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park for snorkeling and diving, hike Mount Kinabalu (80 km away), or explore the Kokol Hills for paragliding. Diving operators like Scuba Junkie and Borneo Dream offer trips to marine parks and wrecks.

Safety

Kota Kinabalu is a safe city with low crime rates compared to other Malaysian cities. Violent crime is rare, and it's generally safe to walk at night. Be aware of moped/scooter snatch theft. Avoid flashing valuables and stay alert in crowded areas.

Popular day trips include Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park (15-min boat ride), Lok Kawi Wildlife Park (30 min south), and Mari Mari Cultural Village (25 min north). Further afield, Mount Kinabalu and Kundasang are about 80 km east.
