Tsetserleg is the capital of Arkhangai province and is widely regarded as the most pleasant of Mongolia's provincial capitals. Set in a beautiful forested valley in the Khangay mountains, this town of around 20,000 people offers a relaxed atmosphere compared to larger cities.

Mobile coverage is available but unreliable in mountain valleys. International roaming works. WiFi is limited to guesthouses and cafes like Fairfield.
Food
Local restaurants serve traditional Mongolian meals (meat, potatoes, rice, soups) for 3,000-5,000₮. Hotel restaurants charge 8,000-10,000₮ per dish. Western food is available at Fairfield Guesthouse.
Language
Mongolian is the official language. English is rarely spoken outside the Fairfield Guesthouse. Russian is more commonly understood for negotiations.
Money
The local currency is the Mongolian tugrik (₮). US dollars are widely accepted for larger tour payments. Bring cash as ATMs may be limited. Budget 50,000-80,000₮ per day for basic expenses.
Transport
Daily buses connect Tsetserleg to Ulaanbaatar on fully paved roads. Within town, hitchhike-style rides cost 500-2,000₮. Cars to nearby attractions can be hired at the "black market" near the city center.
Weather
Summers are mild (up to 23°C in July) while winters are harsh, dropping to -21°C in January. July is the wettest month. Summer offers the best conditions for outdoor activities.
