Tokaj is one of the world's oldest wine regions, producing the legendary Tokaji Aszú since the 16th century. The sweet desert wines, made from grapes affected by noble rot (botrytis cinerea), are unlike anything else on earth.

Language
Hungarian is the local language. English is limited outside tourist establishments. German is more commonly understood. Learn a few Hungarian phrases for goodwill.
Money
Hungarian Forint (Ft) is the local currency. ATMs available in town. Some wineries and restaurants accept cards, but cash is safer for smaller establishments.
Transport
Direct trains from Budapest Keleti to Tokaj take 2h40min and cost around €15. The wine bus service connects Tokaj with neighboring wineries.
Weather
Summers are warm (25-30°C) with perfect vineyard walking weather. Autumn harvest season offers spectacular scenery. Winters are cold with many wineries by appointment only.
Wine
The name "Tokaj" is legally protected. Only wines from the Hungarian or Slovak region can use the Tokaji/Tokaj appellation. Taste before buying—quality varies widely between producers.
