Overview
Nyíregyháza's Sóstó district brings together an open-air museum, a swimming lake, thermal baths and a zoo. The city also works as a stop between Budapest and eastern destinations.
Languages: Hungarian
Why go?
Nyíregyháza is the county seat and largest city in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county in Eastern Hungary, often overlooked by American and British tourists but popular with Polish, Ukrainian, Romanian, and Hungarian visitors. The main draw is the Sóstó suburb north of the city center, home to an excellent Open Air Museum, a lake for swimming, thermal baths, and one of the country's best zoos. It serves as a practical transit hub between Budapest and eastern destinations.

Get in
The Train Station (Nyíregyháza Vasútállomás) offers direct international service to Kyiv, Lviv, and Moscow. From Budapest, hourly trains depart from both Nyugati and Keleti stations (Ft 5200, 2nd class, 3 hours). InterCity trains require seat reservations and sell out quickly on weekends. Regional IC connections include Debrecen (Ft 1100, ~30 min), Miskolc (Ft 1900, 1 hour), and Szolnok (Ft 3700, 2 hours). The Bus Station (Autóbuszállomás) at Petőfi tér provides direct buses to Eger (2-3 per day), Kisvárda (4 per day, 1 hr 25 min), Mátészalka (every half hour until ~19:00, 1½ hr), Miskolc (2-3 per day), and Tokaj (morning and afternoon).

Get around
The train station is located about 15-20 minutes' walk outside the town center. Szabolcs Volán runs bus service throughout the city and to small villages in the region. Nearly all buses from the train station (except #6 and #16) run through the city center. Bus #8 (not #8A) leaves from the train station and town center heading to Sóstó. All tickets can be bought from any newspaper kiosk or from the driver at an additional cost.

When to go
September is the best time to visit as the first weekend kicks off the Nyírség Autumn and Fruit Carnival (Nyírségi Ősz- és Gyümölcskarnevál), with parade floats made entirely out of fruits grown in the region and free concerts at Kossuth square. The Lakeside baths (Tófürdő) are only open July to August. Summer (June-August) is peak season for thermal baths and waterparks, which operate 09:00-20:00.

Food and drink
As with all of Hungary, expect to find lots of places serving gyros, but in the Nyíregyháza region it is always served inside a large hot dog bun with chicken meat—not in a pita. Local restaurants include Csillag Ételbár (Szarvas u. 2), Óriás Hambi és Gyri Bár (Kossuth utca 33), Nyíri Fészek Kisvendéglő (Rákóczi u. 26), and Belvárosi Főzi (Bercsényi u. 4). For drinks, John Bull Pub on Dózsa György u. 1 across from City Hall has a fantastic selection of Hungarian food and beer, though it's mostly frequented by foreign businessmen rather than locals.

Nyíregyháza Zoo is considered one of the country's best, featuring African lions, giraffes, elephants, North American wildlife, and polar bears. Waterparks include Aquarius with four themed worlds (thermal, experience, sauna, children's) at Ft 2900 daily, Spa Park with 7 pools and mini-golf at Ft 1900 after 16:00, and Sóstó bathhouse with mineral pools and jacuzzi from Ft 1990. The Júlia Bath in the city center is cheaper (Ft 1600 adults) with a large swimming pool. Cultural venues include the Jósa András Museum and Móricz Zsigmond town theater.
