Overview
Tiritiri Matangi is one of only two scientific reserves in New Zealand open to the public. This predator-free sanctuary in the Hauraki Gulf has been painstakingly restored by volunteers who planted 250,000–300,000 trees over recent decades.

Before you go
Accommodation
DOC bunkhouse has four rooms with kitchen facilities, hot showers, BBQ. Bring sleeping bag, pillow case, and torch. Book through DOC website.
Connectivity
No mobile phone coverage or WiFi on the island. Disconnect and enjoy the natural environment.
Packing
Bring all food in sealed boxes—no plastic bags allowed. Pack sunblock, hat, warm layers, rain jacket, binoculars, and torch. Animals are prohibited.
Safety
Strict 150-visitor daily limit protects the ecosystem. Weather can delay ferries—allow buffer time. Take all rubbish off the island.
Transport
Explore ferries depart Auckland or Gulf Harbour. Adult fares $95, children $50. Book a week ahead during busy periods as the 150-visitor daily limit fills quickly.
