Why go?

Thanjavur was the ancient capital of the Chola kingdom and is considered the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu, where linguists believe the purest form of Tamil is spoken. The city is home to the magnificent Brihadisvara Temple (Big Temple), a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by Rajaraja Chola I in 1011 CE to celebrate Chola victories extending to Ceylon and parts of the Malay archipelago. Today Thanjavur remains famous for its unique Thanjavur paintings decorated with gems and gold leaf, and the traditional Thanjavur dancing doll (Thanjavur thalai attu bommai). With a literacy rate above 75% and a diverse population, the city offers a more authentic cultural experience than larger tourist centers.
