Overview
Pondicherry's compact French Quarter makes a rewarding area to explore on foot. Autorickshaws and scooters extend the range of a stay beyond its central streets.
Languages: English, Hindi, Tamil
Why go?
Pondicherry is a small city with a dual personality: crossing the central canal from east to west reveals two different cities with very different characters. The French Quarter features Mediterranean-style houses, rues and boulevards lined with bakeries, while the rest remains distinctly Indian. The city was the largest French colony in India and retains enough Gallic flavor to provide mild culture shock after time in Tamil Nadu. It's known as The French Riviera of the East (La Côte d'Azur de l'Est).

Getting in
Pondicherry is connected to Chennai by an electric railway line through Villupuram, with 2 daily passenger trains to Chennai Egmore and Tirupati, plus weekly express services to Bhubaneswar, Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, and Mangalore. Pondicherry Airport handles small aircraft with SpiceJet operating daily flights from Hyderabad and Bangalore. Cabs from the airport charge ₹350 to the city centre; auto rickshaws cost about ₹150 within the airport complex.

Getting around
The city can be navigated on foot in the compact French Quarter, but autorickshaws and scooters are readily available for longer distances. Scooter and moped rentals allow access to the sandy beaches dotting the coastline. The town is divided by a central canal separating the French-influenced east from the Indian west.
