Overview
Thanbyuzayat is a small, quiet Mon State town that holds profound historical significance as the western Myanmar terminus of the Thailand-Burma Railway, infamously known as the Death Railway during World War II. The town draws visitors primarily for its immaculate War Cemetery where 3,617 former prisoners of war are buried, and the modern Death Railway Museum opened in 2016.

Before you go
Connectivity

Culture
Thanbyuzayat is a predominantly Buddhist Mon community. Dress modestly when visiting the War Cemetery and show respect in this solemn memorial space.
Money
Myanmar kyat is the local currency. Cash is preferred as card payments are rarely accepted in Thanbyuzayat. ATMs are limited in this small town; obtain cash in Mawlamyine before traveling.
