Why go?

Tecate is a city of 73,000 people in Baja California on the US-Mexico border, about an hour east of Tijuana. Unlike most border crossings, there is no town on the US side. The city is best known for Tecate beer, one of Mexico's most popular brews, and for being the home of author Daniel Reveles. The main plaza sits at the center of the city with city hall and a historic church within walking distance.

Understand

Tecate sits in a valley surrounded by several hills and mountains, most prominently Kuuchamaa Mountain (also spelled Cuchamaa), known as Tecate Peak in the United States. This mountain is sacred to the Kumeyaay people (Kumiai in Mexico), and the Kumeyaay language is still spoken in the mountains near Tecate at Juntas de Nejí. Kuuchamaa is rich in greenery, wildflowers, and birds, with many trails for hiking and biking. The climate is hot and dry in summer, cool and sometimes rainy in winter.

Get in

Tecate is accessible via the US Customs Border Crossing Station. The city lies along Highway 3, which connects to Ensenada to the south and the broader Baja California road network. Most visitors arrive from Tijuana or cross from California.

See

The Tecate plaza serves as the central gathering point, surrounded by traditional architecture. Kuuchamaa Mountain offers hiking opportunities with views and nature trails. El Vallecito archaeological site at La Rumorosa features 23 cave paintings and petroglyphs managed by INAH, though only 5 are open for public display (open W-Su 08:00-15:00, closed M-Tu; admission M$75).

Things to do

The yearly Tecate-Ensenada bike ride is a notable annual event. Rancho La Puerta offers health spa experiences, and was co-founded by Deborah Szekely who later established the Golden Door spa. California Motorsport Adventours provides off-road adventure tours for all riding abilities, with trips to Tecate lasting 2-4 days departing from San Diego.

Drink

Tecate is home to the Tecate Brewery, which offers tours explaining the history and uniqueness of Tecate Beer. After the Mexican War of Independence in 1845, barley beer was introduced, and the industry developed with taste and technology from German and Austrian immigrants throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
