Before you go
Festival
Taebaeksan Snow Festival (late January, 10 days) features snow sculptures and sledding. Sunflower Festival runs late July to mid-August at Guwau Village (₩5,000).
Food
Taebaek dakgalbi (₩9,000) is the signature dish—spicy chicken with wild greens. Hanu beef (₩34,000/200g) and sanchae-bibimbap (₩10,000-12,000) with mountain herbs are local specialties.
Money
South Korean Won (KRW) is the local currency. Cash is preferred at traditional markets like Hwangji Free Market and Tongni 5-Day Market; cards accepted at larger hotels and restaurants.
Packing
Bring layers even in summer—temperatures drop significantly at high altitude. Winter visitors need full cold weather gear for the Snow Festival and hiking to Cheonjedan.
Transport
ITX-Maum from Seoul Cheongnyangni takes 3 hours to Taebaek Station; buses from Dong Seoul Terminal depart every 30-50 minutes (3h 10m).
Weather
Taebaek stays cool year-round—only one tropical night recorded since 1985. Even summer mornings at high elevations like Chujeon Station (855m) may need heating.
