Before you go

Accommodation

Tabatinga's hotel options are limited and basic. Budget travelers often prefer staying in Leticia, Colombia for more choice — the Colombian town is contiguous and reachable without passing immigration. Pousada da Praça offers the only backpacker-oriented dorm option at R$35.

Culture

The city is culturally diverse with Brazilians, Colombians, Peruvians, and indigenous groups living together. The border with Leticia is essentially open — you can walk between countries without formal immigration checks, though you should still get exit stamps from Federal Police when leaving Brazil.

Money

All three currencies (reais, pesos, soles) are freely exchanged, though shopping in Leticia, Colombia is tax-free and often preferred. ATMs available at Bradesco on Av. da Amizade. Port taxis overcharge 2-4x — negotiate or use moto-taxis instead.

Transport

No roads connect Tabatinga to other cities — access is exclusively by plane or boat. River travel to Manaus takes 1-4 days. Speed boats to Iquitos depart from Santa Rosa (Peru). Flights to Manaus via Azul, to Bogotá via Leticia with Avianca/LATAM.

Weather

Tropical rainforest climate year-round with consistent 22-30°C temperatures and high humidity. June-September is drier. The wet season (December-May) brings higher rivers. Pack light, breathable clothing and rain gear regardless of when you visit.
