Why Go

Leticia is Colombia's southernmost town and the gateway to the Colombian Amazon—a remote triple-frontier city where Colombia, Brazil (Tabatinga), and Peru meet at the Amazon River. With 42,000+ inhabitants, it serves as the sole major port on the Colombian Amazon and the regional hub with the only hospital, airport, secondary schools, and 24/7 electricity. The city is the base for jungle lodges, indigenous community visits, and Amazon expeditions.

Get In

Leticia is accessible only by plane or boat due to dense tropical rainforest and lack of highways. Alfredo Vásquez Cobo International Airport provides flights from Bogotá and other major Colombian cities. The Port of Leticia connects by river to Brazilian and Peruvian destinations. No highways lead to this isolated frontier town.

Getting Around

Mototaxis are the primary mode of transport—expect to pay COP$2,000 between the frontier and Parque Santander (June 2021 prices). Motocarros (tuk-tuks) offer covered protection from rain. Bicycle rentals and motorcycle rentals are available around town: COP$50,000 per day, COP$30,000 per day for weekly rentals, COP$25,000 for longer periods—haggle on prices.

When To Go

Leticia maintains a consistent average temperature of 27°C year-round. The dry season (June-October) offers easier travel conditions, while the wet season brings higher water levels for river exploration. Tourist cruises (including MV World Explorer, MV Bremen, MV Le Levant) arrive March-April. Yellow fever vaccination must be obtained at least 10 days before entering the area and is free in Colombia for travelers to high-risk zones.

Food And Drink

Leticia is a culinary melting pot reflecting its three-country border. Local staples include sancocho (hearty soup) with regional variations, meats baked with potatoes, grilled meats with rice and plantains, and Amazonian specialties like cazuela (soup/stew) and palm weevil larvae called "the caviar of the Amazon." Street food clusters at Parque Santander and along Calle 9 and Calle 7. Bar Restaurante Tierras Amazónicas offers typical Amazonian food with excellent cocktails.

Things To Do

Day tours (approx. COP$150,000, 8AM-5PM) visit water lily island, monkey island, indigenous tribes, Puerto Narino, and Tarapoto Lake with pink dolphin watching. The Ethnographic Museum (Carrera 11 # 9–43, M-F 8:30AM-6PM) offers English/Spanish exhibits on indigenous cultures with WiFi and AC. Public boats to Puerto Narino depart at 8AM, 10AM, and 2PM—return at 3:30PM. Micos Monkey Island costs COP$51,000 roundtrip (June 2021). Stay Safe

Jungle safety requires caution: do not swim while bleeding (piranhas attracted to blood), check boots for spiders before wearing (some deadly), and never approach snakes. Dangerous species inhabit the rainforest. Power outages occur occasionally but don't last long. The triple-border location means standard urban precautions apply in town.
