Overview
Tababela exists primarily as an airport layover town for the Aeropuerto Internacional Mariscal Sucre, which opened in 2013 to serve Quito. The airport sits about 90 minutes from central Quito by bus with no stops, making Tababela's proximity invaluable for travelers with extremely early or late flights.

Before you go
Accommodation
Airport shuttle services run about $5 per person each way when pre-arranged. Budget $40+ per night for clean options with breakfast.
Connectivity
Free WiFi is common at accommodations. SIM cards available at airport Mall del Cielo or local tiendas. Some Spanish helpful for setup.
Language
Very few locals speak English aside from some lodging operators. Spanish is essential for navigating town during the day and for purchasing SIM cards or understanding local services.
Money
Ecuador uses US dollars, so no currency conversion is needed for American travelers. Carry cash for tiendas and local restaurants, as card acceptance is limited outside airport establishments.
Safety
The town is generally safe but poorly lit at night with uneven pavement and storm drain openings. Carry a flashlight for evening returns.
Transport
Taxis from the airport run about $10 to Tababela, higher than local norms because drivers prefer Quito fares. Walk within town; it is small enough to navigate entirely on foot.
