Overview
Staraya Ladoga is where Viking Rurik founded Russia's first state capital in 862, and modern restorations have revived its 12th-century kremlin and churches with frescoes by master Andrei Rublev. The village preserves enormous kurgans (burial mounds) including one believed to be Rurik's final resting place, and the Church of St George the Conqueror commemorates the town's 1164 victory over Swedish invaders.
