Overview
St Lucia is a small beach town at the southern tip of iSimangaliso Wetland Park, used by most visitors as their hub for exploring the area. The town serves as a convenient base for Big 5 safaris at Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park, estuary cruises viewing hippos and crocodiles, turtle nesting tours, and unspoiled beaches at Cape Vidal.

Safety
Hippos and crocodiles are present in the estuary and waterways—never swim in the St Lucia estuary. Follow guide instructions on boat tours. Malaria is present in the region; consult a doctor before visiting.
Transport
St Lucia is accessed via the N2 and R618 from Durban (250 km) or Johannesburg (600 km). The town is walkable; you'll need your own vehicle or booked tours for day trips to Cape Vidal and safari parks.
Wildlife
Over 400 bird species recorded. Leatherback and loggerhead turtles nest on nearby beaches November to March. Southern right whales pass through June to November.
