Understand

Hluhluwe town is named after umHluhluwe (Dalbergia armata), a thorny rope climber found in the forest vegetation of Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park. The area produces over 90% of South Africa's queen pineapples, along with sugar-cane, sisal, cotton, tomatoes, and chillies. The Elephant Coast region is known for its national parks, natural diversity, and Zulu cultural heritage, remaining relatively undeveloped but attracting increasing international tourism.

Getting in

Hluhluwe is accessible via the R22 road which connects to the northern region of KwaZulu-Natal. Border posts for Eswatini (Swaziland) and Mozambique are accessible through the R22. The nearest major airport is King Shaka International Airport in Durban. Self-drive is the most practical option given limited public transport in the area. The R22 is part of the Lubombo spatial development initiative, marketed as Route 22 by the Umhlosinga Development Agency.
