Sremska Mitrovica is a town built on Roman bones. Ten Roman emperors were born here when Sirmium was one of four capitals of the Empire, and excavations from that era are scattered throughout the modern town.

Etiquette
Dress modestly when visiting churches; cover shoulders and knees. Remove hats inside Orthodox churches. Greet locals with a handshake; a kiss on both cheeks is common among friends. Tipping 10% is appreciated but not obligatory in restaurants.
Food
Syrmian cuisine features pork specialties (sausages, bacon, cured meats) and freshwater fish from the Sava and Danube rivers. Local wine from Fruska Gora vineyards is worth sampling. Rakija (fruit brandy) is the traditional digestif. Meal prices are significantly lower than in Western Europe.
History
Sremska Mitrovica was the Roman capital Sirmium, birthplace of ten emperors. Roman ruins and excavations are scattered throughout the modern town. The Imperial Palace, Basilica of St. Demetrius remains, and archaeological sites are open to visitors. The town name means ‘City of Saint Demetrius.’
Money
Serbia uses the Serbian Dinar (RSD). ATMs are available in town; credit cards are accepted at some hotels and restaurants but not universally. Carry cash for smaller establishments and markets. Exchange rates are generally fair at banks or authorized exchange offices.
Transport
Sremska Mitrovica lies on the Belgrade–Novi Sad railway. Trains serve both cities regularly; the journey from Belgrade takes about an hour. Buses also operate but with less frequency. Driving from Belgrade takes roughly one hour via the A1 motorway.
Weather
Sremska Mitrovica experiences continental climate: hot summers (25–35°C) ideal for the riverside beach, cold winters (−5 to 5°C) with occasional snow. Spring and autumn offer mild temperatures best for monastery visits and hiking in Fruska Gora.
