Before you go
Money
Bring Sri Lankan Rupees in cash. There are no ATMs near the forest. Entrance fee is Rs. 500 per person. Guide fees are typically negotiated in Kudawa village. Eco Villa accepts USD; other accommodations may prefer LKR.
Packing
Sturdy waterproof boots, long trousers, binoculars, reusable water bottle, insect repellent, rain jacket, first aid kit, and all food for your planned stay. No single-use plastic bottles allowed inside.
Safety
Go with a registered guide at all times. Boots and walking sticks are essential. Streams are off-limits for swimming. Beware of snakes, leeches, and wild elephants. Pitadeniya entrance has reported guide scams.
Transport
Public buses connect Hatton to the Kudawa entrance via Avissawella, Ratnapura, and Kalawana. The full journey takes about 5 hours and costs approximately Rs. 290. Buses are infrequent on rural legs—check schedules in advance.
Weather
Rainforest climate means rain at any time. December-April and August-September are driest windows. Humidity is high year-round. Trails become slippery during and after rain.
