Overview
Ratnapura (literally "City of Gems") sits on the Kalu Ganga in Sabaragamuwa Province, 101 km southeast of Colombo. The city is the heart of Sri Lanka's gem mining industry, drawing visitors to working mines, gem showrooms, and the weekly market in nearby Newitigala.

Public SLTB buses from Colombo (routes 67, 98, 99, 122) take 4 hours; Superline luxury night buses cost Rs 2260. Route 122 departs 3-4 times hourly.
