Why Go?

Galle has been an important port for centuries, with a history shaped by Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonizers. The well-preserved fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a vibrant area with cobblestone streets, colonial buildings, museums, shops, eateries, and ocean views. It's perfect for history buffs, architecture lovers, and those seeking a slower pace than Colombo.

Getting In

From Colombo, you can take a southern line train to Galle (Rs 240 3rd class, Rs 500 2nd class, 1.5-3.5 hr) or a bus. Private A/C minibuses from Colombo Fort cost Rs 270 and take 3+ hours with ocean views. Southern Expressway luxury buses from Maharagama cost Rs 780 and take 1.5 hours. Galle Railway Station is right on the seashore.

Getting Around

Tuk-tuks and walking are best for exploring Galle and the fort. The old town is within walking distance from the central bus station. Buses are cheap for nearby destinations: to Unawatuna (Rs 20, 10-15 min), Matara, or Hikkaduwa.

Where to Stay

Galle offers a range from budget guest houses within the fort to luxury boutique hotels. Budget options include Rampart View Guest House, Thenu Rest, Rosa Shashi Cabanas (from Rs 2000), Fort Inn Guest House (from US$20), and Khalid's guest house (US$20). Many are family-run and offer breakfast. Outside the fort, there are resorts like the Lighthouse Resort.

Food & Drink

Eat at Mama's for authentic Sri Lankan food and cooking classes, or Serindipity for dessert. Anura's Restaurant serves local and international dishes. For drinks, the Rampart Hotel offers meals and drinks (about SLR1600 for a meal with drinks). The Lighthouse Hotel has an all-you-can-eat buffet for about Rs 1200. Street food is available at markets.

Things to Do

Walk the ramparts of Galle Fort at sunrise or sunset for free. Visit turtle hatcheries along the coast, the National Sea Museum in the old Dutch warehouse, and the Dutch Reformed Church. Explore the fort's shops for gems and antiques. A walk around the fort's walls is a must.

Day Trips

Unawatuna (5 km, bus Rs 20, 10-15 min) is a beautiful beach. Mirissa and Hikkaduwa are also easy to reach by train or bus. Madu River offers boat tours through mangroves. Kanneliya Forest Reserve has waterfalls and nature trails. Sinharaja Forest Reserve and Yala National Park are farther but possible as day trips.

Buses to Bandaranaike International Airport depart from the cricket oval at 06:30 and 16:30. Other onward destinations include Matara, Mirissa, Hikkaduwa, and beyond. Kanneliya Forest Reserve and Sinharaja Forest Reserve are also accessible.
