Why go?

Silent Valley National Park (also known as Indira Gandhi National Park) is one of Kerala's most pristine evergreen forests, offering a rare window into undisturbed Western Ghats biodiversity. The park is home to the endangered Lion Tailed Macaque, over 1000 species of flowering plants, and the east-flowing Bhavani river. For nature enthusiasts and trekkers, the highlight is the dramatic watch tower at 1,050 meters elevation with panoramic views, followed by a trek down to the pristine Kunthi river with its iconic hanging bridge.

Understand

The park derives its 'Silent Valley' name from the absence of cicada noise that typically fills Indian forests. Wildlife includes the Lion Tailed Macaque, tigers, elephants, and over 120 bird species. The park was established in 1989 after years of activism against a proposed hydroelectric dam project that would have flooded the valley.

Climate

Humid during the monsoon rains from June to August, with hot and tropical conditions prevailing for the rest of the year. The best time to visit is during the dry season when wildlife sightings near water sources are more predictable.

Getting in

Entry to Silent Valley is only permitted through Mukkali, the gateway village 20 km from Mannarkkad. From Palakkad (60 km away), KSRTC buses depart every 30 minutes to Mukkali via Mannarkkad. Alternative routes exist from Coimbatore (65 km via Anakkatty and Agali Hills) and Kozhikode (120 km). The nearest major railway stations are Palghat Junction and Coimbatore Junction. Reserve rooms in advance at the Forest department resthouse in Mukkali by telephone before arriving.

Fees and permits

Telephone reservations can be made for the Forest department ticket counter at Mukkali, which operates between 8AM and 1PM including Sundays. Government bus entry costs ₹325 per person (more comfortable option), while a private government jeep for up to 5 adults costs ₹1,700. Additional fees apply for cameras. Expect significant queues at the tiny counter even with reservations, and plan for a full day—the entire experience takes 5-7 hours.

Get around

All visitors must enter and exit between 8AM and 1PM, a restriction designed to minimize disturbance to wildlife. Vehicles travel slowly along the 23 km unpaved road with several five-minute photo stops. Each vehicle includes a free Forest Department guide. The endpoint is a watch tower at 1,050 meters above sea level where only 12 adults are allowed at a time (though many ignore this limit). A one-hour trek leads down to the Kunthi river and hanging bridge. Free mineral water is available at the watch tower.

Things to do

The main activities include the scenic drive with wildlife viewing (though animal sightings are rare), ascending the watch tower for spectacular valley views at 1,050m elevation, and trekking to the Kunthi river where you can cross the hanging bridge. Bathing in the Bhawani River at Mukkali offers a refreshing dip in pristine waters—this river uniquely flows eastward from Kerala toward Tamil Nadu. Day trips to surrounding villages like Pakkulam (with its Karmel Catholic church and Sahiyan Meditation centre) and Thavalam offer cultural experiences.

Eat

Dining options are extremely limited near the park. The Sairandri restaurant at Tree Top Resort in Chindakki offers good food, while a small crowded restaurant operates at Mukkali junction. For better variety, head to Mannarkkad. There's a tiny restaurant in front of the Park office, but service is slow due to understaffing.

Drink

Bottled water is readily available at Mukkali. Alcohol is strictly prohibited throughout the entire forest area, and officials inspect luggage before allowing vehicles to proceed into the valley.

Stay safe

Leeches are common in the jungle during monsoon and wet seasons; carry table salt from Mukkali to remove them from your legs. In 2014, Maoists attacked the park's ticket counter at Mukkali, though the situation has since stabilized with increased police presence and frequent tourist ID verification in town areas. Main roads and villages remain generally safe.

Go next

From Mukkali, nearby destinations include Agali Hills (20 km), Mannarkkad (20 km), and Anakkatty border town (36 km) where you can cross into Tamil Nadu. Longer distances lead to Palakkad (60 km), Coimbatore (65 km), Shornur (75 km), Thrissur (130 km), Kozhikode (120 km), and Kochi (155 km). Buses to Kerala destinations depart every 20 minutes via Mannarkkad; Coimbatore-bound buses leave hourly. The best strategy is to include scenic Anakkatty as your final stop and board buses from that hub.
