Why go?
Ooty offers a cool escape from South Indian heat, sitting at 2,240 m elevation with pleasant temperatures of 20-25°C year-round. The hill station combines British colonial heritage with indigenous Toda and tribal culture, rolling tea gardens, and access to wildlife sanctuaries. The UNESCO-listed Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train ranks among India's most scenic train journeys, while nearby Coonoor and Kotagiri offer quieter alternatives with cheaper prices and fewer crowds.

Getting there
The nearest airport is Coimbatore (88 km, 3.5 hours), though Mysore (116 km, 4 hours) and Kozhikode (140 km, 4 hours) are alternatives. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway connects Ooty with Mettupalayam on a UNESCO-listed meter-gauge toy train. Direct buses from Coimbatore take 4 hours via KSRTC Kerala and private operators; TNSTC runs direct buses from Kozhikode; KSRTC Karnataka and private buses serve Mysore, all integrated on Redbus.

Get around
Taxis, tourist cabs, and auto rickshaws are plentiful; auto rickshaws charge a minimum of ₹30. Town buses reach all important places. Conducted day tours cost ₹125-150 by bus or ₹900-1100 by taxi. Verify all costs with hotels before trips as drivers often demand extra parking fees or lunch. Avoid restaurants recommended by drivers as they receive 20% commission and food is overpriced and cold.

When to go
Ooty maintains pleasant weather year-round at 20-25°C, with nights dropping to 10-15°C. The Summer Festival in May features flower shows and cultural programs at the Botanical Gardens. Peak tourist season coincides with Indian holidays, increasing crowds and prices. Tea plantations and rose gardens bloom best from late April to early June.

Historical and cultural sites
Fern Hills Palace, the Mysore Maharaja's palace-turned-hotel, offers affordable tea snacks and pricier buffet dinners in beautiful grounds. St. Stephen's Church (1831) is the oldest church in Ooty with stained glass and a clock tower, marking the zero milestone for distances. Government Museum (Stone House, 1823) showcases Nilgiri tribal culture, flora, fauna, archaeology, and numismatics (₹10 Indians, ₹100 foreigners, closed Fridays). The Toda Temple inside the Botanical Garden features an inverted U-shaped bamboo structure where outsiders cannot enter but can observe buffalo herds and traditional shawls.

Safety
The hill town suffers from overcrowding and strain on natural resources. Remote restaurants recommended by taxi or bus drivers are overpriced with poor quality food; politely decline. Avoid accepting hotel recommendations from drivers as they take 20% commission added to your bill. Carry reusable bags as Ooty was among the first places in India to ban plastic carry bags.

Connectivity
Standard Indian mobile networks (Airtel, Jio, Vodafone) provide coverage in town. WiFi is available at larger hotels and some cafes. Power sockets use Indian three-pin round plugs (Type D/M). Mobile data works well in the main town but may be patchy in surrounding hills and wildlife sanctuaries.

Budget tips
Backpackers can manage on ₹1,500-2,000/day including budget accommodation (₹400-900), meals at local restaurants (₹200-400), and local transport (₹200-500 including occasional taxi). Attractions cost ₹6-100 entry fees; Doddabetta Peak is cheapest at ₹6. Avoid organized tours where drivers earn commission; negotiate directly or use state-run TTDC tours. Shop at Municipal Market for fresh local fruits at lower prices than tourist shops.
